The world's largest fly rod and reel is located at Pirate's Landing Restaurant in Port Isabel, Texas.
This project was the brainchild of TINEY MITCHELL of King Salmon, Alaska who spends the winters in Port Isabel, Texas.
Without the help of Tiney's good friend LeROY ADDISION of Cimarron, Kansas, this could never have been built.
In an attempt to "spark" interest in the Laguna Madre Fly Fishing Club, Tiney came up with this idea. And, since he suggested this project, was elected as a "Committee of One" to pursue the possibility of building this mammoth rod and reel.
The functional fiberglass rod was constructed by Tiney Mitchell and LeRoy Addison with engineering assistance from Strongwell Co., Bristol, VA. The rod material was donated by Smith Fiberglass Co., Wichita, KS. The rod is 71 feet and 4.5 inches tall.
The functional reel is 4 feet in diameter and made of the highest grade aircraft aluminum. The reel was manufactured by Barry Bledsoe, Bledsoe Brace Co., Dallas, TX. The reel seat and rod guides were made by Petersen Machine, Kennedale, TX.
All expenses for this project were paid for by Tiney Mitchell.
The operation of the fly rod would require the combined strength of two dozen strong men or "ONE LARGE TEXAN!". |
